8th May 2010
Pinhoe Spartans 3 v 4 Twyford
Goals:
Brandon Carnell 2, Tyler Smith

Last match of the season and a game Pinhoe had to win to avoid certain relegation.

Pinhoe were positive from the off with Kieron and Brandon combining well to put the opposition under pressure. Despite this Twyford took the lead when a mis-header put their striker through. Pinhoe continued to play with confidence with Jake having a specuative shot that wasn't far off the target. Soon after Harry put Tyler through who in turn gave it to Brandon who equlaised. Almost immediately after Brandon did manage to put a shot into row Z from 4 yards out but at this stage it seemed as if it was only a matter of time before Pinhoe took the lead. Tyler forced the keeper to make a stretching save and Rory's free kick glanced the bar. But it was Twyford who broke through and made it 2-1. Pihnoe showed their resolve and equalised straight from the kick off thanks to Tyler who was supplied by Jake and Brandon.

The second half began with Pinhoe straight at Twyford and again it was all Pinhoe, Harry crossed well and Owen played some good balls.

Finally Pinhoe took the lead, Brandon scored as the opposition stood waitng for the ref's whistle. Sadly Pinhoe couldn't maintain the lead, a needless free kick conceded led to a goal mouth scramble which left the ball in the net. To add insult to injury Twyford got a winner which could have been cleared and so another match lost which we should have got a least a point from.

Overall everyone played their part with Jack doing well in goal, Josh Reed steady in defence and Kai chasing hard up front.

Man of the match is Kieron who not only created chances but also battled hard throughout.

Well done boys for a hard fought season which has to be put down as character building- The new season's just around the corner.

Player of Match: Kieron Appleby

4th May 2010
Pinhoe Spartans 2 v 4 Alphington
Goals:
Owen Castle, Tyler Smith

Pinhoe started this match with all guns blazing and took the lead while your reporter was still trying to open his notebook!! Owen opened up the scoring straight from the kick off, thereafter it was all Pinhoe with Tyler shooting, and Kieron and Jake combining well also.

After this whirlwind start the game settled down and Alphington equalised from a free kick. Pinhoe upped their game and Tyler battled well up front giving us the lead flicking the ball over the keeper who had fumbled. Owen played well behind Tyler and showed the rest of the team how to get stuck in.

Alphington were more focussed in the second half and equlaised straight from the kick off and from then on had more pressure. This led to a third and fourth goal, the latter being the result of a powerful run through the middle. In response Pinhoe did come close with Tyler shooting just over the bar and finally Brandon dribbled most of the length of the pitch and shot just over. Overall everyone played well a deserves mention because they each played a part.

This was another match that we could have won or at least drawn but at least the boys continue to play in a sporting manner and show a good attitude from which their parents can be proud.

Player of Match: Owen Castle/Brandon Carnell

24th April 2010
Pinhoe Spartans 5 v 0 Central
Goals:
Kai Salam, Brandon Carnel, Cory Hancock (2), Tyler Smith

With Coach Gary Proctor enjoying a late season break in Sandy Bay (is that in the Caribbean?) Pinhoe were two playe light also. However extra training from Stuart Fleetwood obviously paid off as the boys showed that they can pass and move. Kai put Pinhoe into an early lead collecting a ball which was neatly slotted through. Kai almost made it 2-0 but couldn't finish Tyler's shot which had come off the post. Central came close but Brandon made it 2-0 with a shot from out wide which may well have been a cross!

Central played better in the second half and were more competitive but failed to hit the target with a number of shots. THat said Jack did pull off a number of good saves. Kai headed Rory's corner just wide but a minute later Rory put Tyler through whose shot bounced off the bar and Cory followed in crashing into the post to make it 3-0. Cory them made it 4-0 from a corner. Central's keeper pulled off a succession of saves before Tyler made it 5-0 despite a handball from a Central player.

Overall Pinhoe played well throughout the team, but need to learn how to head having missed at least 4 great opportunities from corners. Tommy made some great tackles and Owen played some intelligent balls, however Man of the Match is Kai played well throughout the game.

Player of Match: Kai Salam

10th April 2010
Pinhoe Spartans 1 v 3 Dawlish
Goals: Kai Salam

Despite the scoreline, Pinhoe matched Dawlish for quite alot of the game. However it was Dawlish that took their chances with two well worked first half goals. Early on Harry threaded two quality balls through the defence but the Pins failed to convert the chances they created. There was generally a lack of talking throughout the team and a few players were definately not playing with any conviction. That said Owen and Cory both had some good touches.

Early in the second half Tyler shot just over the bar but unfortunately it was Dawlish that found the net, shooting under the keeper to seal the win. Pinhoe pulled a goal back with Cory passing to Kai who finished well. After that Pinhoe played with a bit more belief. Tommy produced a succession of tackles and Brandon did well in defence. The closing stages were closely fought but Pinhoe couldn't find a goal.

There is no Man of the Match today as nobody played well enough to merit it. As Gary said you need to want to win a bit more.

7th April 2010
Pinhoe Spartans 1 v 5 Thorverton
Goals: Cory Hancock

Pinhoe couldn't make it three wins on the trot despite a spirited performance from all the players.

The first half was very evenly matched with Pinhoe having the better goal attempts. Cory put the Pins ahead collecting a long ball from Brandon and then tucking it under the keeper. Further goal attempts were seen from Kieron and Cory but at the other end Jack tipped a shot around the post while the defence battled hard. Tyler played with maturity, maintaining his position. The midfield worked hard and started to match Thorverton in the tackles and maintain their postions. Amongst the scrapping Pinhoe worked some good moves particularly Harry and Jake. Thorverton equalised just before half time when a parried long shot was follow-up.

The second half was littered with a number of injuries, rivalling only Arsenal! Thorverton took the lead from a great long range shot and then extended again almost immediately with an identical shot. Pinhoe played well with Owen now on and playing some good balls in. An unchallenged run by Thorverton led to a fourth goal and then another long shot beat Jack to make it 5-1. Late on Jack pulled off a great 1 v 1 save.

Overall a good performance especially in the first half where the boys battled hard, talked to one another, maintained their shape and worked up and down the pitch.

Man of the match is a tricky one with all the team in with a shout from the first half. However after a few soundings, the consensus is Tyler and Rory who both did very little wrong throughout the whole match.

20th March 2010
Central City 0 v 2 Pinhoe Spartans
Goals: Kieran Appleby 2

After last week's maiden victory, Pinhoe stepped into this bottom of the table clash full of confidence. The opening minutes were, as ever, scrappy with neither team settling down. Pinhoe looked the more threatening team as time went on and it was Harry who put Owen through on goal forcing the keeper to save but Kieron was on hand to follow up and give Pinhoe the lead. Pinhoe didn't go on to dominate this game and didn't make use of the space on both wings instead the play was concerntrated in the middle of the park. At times the midfield were so close together they could have been holding hands! Although Central had some pressure it was Pinhoe who had the goal attempts with Brandon, Jake and Kieron all shooting and Harry coming very close. At one point Pinhoe did show some great play with a series of one touch moves from Jack, Rory, Owen and finally Kieron shooting but these few and far between.

Early in the second half Kieron's looping shot beat the keeper and gave Pinhoe the security of a 2 goal lead. Pinhoe maintained the pressure but Central were far from beaten and the defence had to work hard to keep Central out.

Kai was showing some great touches and was combining well with Owen up front. Lewis and Josh Reed both had good shots. In the dying moments Harry's cross was dropped by the keeper but Kai's follow-up was disallowed and so it finished 2-0.

Overall a deserved victory in which everyone played well but without any exceptional performances. Jack had a day off in goal for once. Man of the match is Kieron not only for 2 goals but a lively performance throughout.

They say things come in threes, so here's to next week!

13th March 2010
Pinhoe Spartans 2 v 1 Exwick
Goals: Cory Hancock, Owen Castle

Everything comes to those who wait. And so after what seemed like a very long wait Pinhoe finally achieved their first win of the season. Having lost heavily to this team before Christmas, Pinhoe upped their game and finally matched the opposition in terms of effort.

The first half was well battled with Pinhoe competing in all areas of the pitch. The tempo of the game was certainly increased from previous weeks and both sides put some good moves together with Exwick coming closest to breaking the deadlock. The half finished goalless but Kai, Harry & Cory all had shots meanwhile, Jack pulled off a good save and the defence in general played well with Tyler doing particularly well maintaining his position.

The deadlock was broken early in the second half when Rory thundered a long range free kick which rattled the cross bar and allowed Cory to follow up and give Pinhoe the lead. Harry and Cory then combined to force a save but soon after Exwick won a free kick which was blasted into the net.

Kieron had now joined the attack against his old team and injected some extra urgency. Exwick too had also upped their game sensing that they could go on and win. However another Rory free kick was buried by Owen and Pinhoe were 2-1 ahead. At this point the final whistle couldn't come quick enough for the spectators and during that time there were one or two close shaves but Jack saved well. And so it was with relief that the final whistle did go and the boys achieved a well deserved win. We've always known they can compete with any other team and today they battled a bit harder and made less mistakes- Well done everyone - onward and upward!

Player of Match: The whole team

6th March 2010
St Martins 5 v 3 Pinhoe Spartans
Goals: Cory Hancock 2, Harry Mollins

A bright sunny morning and a flat pitch welcomed Pinhoe for what promised to be a close encounter, and so it proved.

All the Pinhoe players made a positive contribution to an entertaining game in which the boys battled harder and made less mistakes than has been seen over recent weeks.

Pinhoe opened the game well with Josh Reed fizzing a shot over the bar. Cory was alreaday proving to be a handful on the left wing. However St Martins were starting to ply the pressure which Pinhoe absorbed initially. Harry and Kieron fashioned a good effort but St Martins pressure paid off when deputising keeper Josh Riglar spilled a shot which was followed up. St Martins extended their lead with a soft goal which trickled over the line. 2-0 at half time, probably a fair reflection as St Martins had most of the pressure and had won most of the balls in midfield.

The second half saw Kieron taking over the goalie gloves and Josh Riglar moving to midfield where we started to compete.

Jake won the ball on the right and squared it to Cory who rounded the keeper to pull a goal back.

Soon after Rory's clearence to Cory drew the scores level. Pinhoe were playing well at this point with good contributions from Tyler, & the 2 Joshes. A free kick from Rory fell to Harry on the far post who made it 3-2.

Our lead was sadly shortlived. St Martins equalised when a poor clearence went straight to one of their players who shot straight past Kieron. St Martins took the lead with a well worked routine from a throw-in. St Martins made sure of the victory with a 5th goal where again Pinhoe failed to clear the ball.

The positives from this match was that Pinhoe battled and worked hard throughout the match and cut down on the mistakes but these still cost us a couple of goals. All the team played well, man of the match? - Cory has a great shout for two goals and a lively opening few minutes, Rory had a few votes for a solid defensive performance and 2 assists, but Josh Reed edges it for a solid performance in defence not only today but on a number of other games where he has been close to man of the match.

Player of Match: Josh Reed
